Introduction to LGBTQ Studies: Interview with Daniel Cobos

An oral history interview with Daniel Cobos concerning his status as a gay, Latino man, his time in the U.S. Air Force, and his career working at an HIV and transgender clinic, was conducted by Rick Lopez and Talia Smith on November 20, 2016. At the time of the interview, Cobos was the Outreach Coordinator for the HIV Team at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Cobos attended the University of Texas at Austin, Creighton University, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He was associated with the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and received several volunteer service awards from the Nebraska AIDS Project. The interview was conducted as part of a project for Professor Jay Irwin's Fall 2016 Sociology 3700: Introduction to LGBTQ Studies course., Cobos discussed his first time hearing about HIV as a young college student in the 1980s and how that affected the overall course of his life. He also explained his decision to join the Air Force and the difficulty of navigating both his work life and his personal life. Cobos then discussed his views on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and its later repeal. After leaving the military, Cobos described his time volunteering with the Buddy Program before returning to school to earn his nursing degree.
